jones branch connector bridge project

Project Type: Roadway & ITS | Status: Completed

This project provides an important new link to Route 123 over I-495 (Capital Beltway) for commuters and visitors to Tysons. The link improves local traffic and access for drivers, as well as provided a vital option for area transit, bicyclists, and pedestrians to reach destinations such as the 495 Express Lanes and McLean Metro Station.

The road, now called Scotts Crossing Road in its entirety between Jones Branch Drive and Route 123, is expected to have carried more than 21,000 vehicles a day in 2020 and more than 32,000 by 2040.

Technical Details:

The half-mile project included a new bridge over the I-495 Inner Loop and the northbound 495 Express Lanes, and new roadway from the bridge to the former western terminus of Scotts Crossing Road. The bridge over the I-495 Outer Loop that existed prior to construction was widened and lengthened to accommodate a future road underneath. The existing bridge over the southbound 495 Express Lanes was also widened. Improvements were made along the access road from Jones Branch Drive to the Express Lanes, as well as along the existing portion of Scotts Crossing Road.

Scope of work included but was not limited to:

  • Over 17,000 LF of Fiber Optic Cable
  • Over 103,000 LF of Conductor
  • Over 500 CY of Concrete Foundations
  • Approximately 50 Luminaires, Associated Light Poles and Electrical Services
  • 4 Traffic Signal Intersections
  • Ground Mounted Signs

Key Improvements:

  • Two travel lanes and on-street bike lanes in each direction
  • 8- to 12-foot-wide lighted sidewalks, landscaping, and other streetscape amenities
  • A wide, raised median to accommodate future transit
  • A clear sound wall along westbound Scotts Crossing Road from Spring Gate Drive to the I-495 Inner Loop

The road, now called Scotts Crossing Road in its entirety between Jones Branch Drive and Route 123, is expected to carry more than 21,000 vehicles a day in 2020 and more than 32,000 by 2040.

Benefits/Positive Aspects to Community:

By providing an alternate route across the Beltway and linking the Tysons East and Central areas, the project aims to relieve traffic along Route 123, at the I-495 Interchange, and at other congested intersections.
